Washington, Sept 25 : In the wake of the recent surge in tensions with Pakistan over unilateral strikes by US-led forces from across the Afghan border, the US administration has reportedly called for a review of US strategy in Afghanistan.

A senior Pentagon official said that US President George Bush has ordered a review of US strategy in Afghanistan, amid rising insurgent violence and tensions with Pakistan.

The review is being led by Lieutenant General Douglas Lute, a deputy national security adviser, with the participation of senior representatives from the Pentagon and other departments, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Lahore, Sept 25: NWFP Governor Owais Ghani has said that the US should talk to Mullah Omar in order to negotiate peace in Afghanistan. Further elaborating his suggestion, he said that the West must hold talks with the Taliban as “Al Qaeda was regrouping from Iraq to Afghanistan”.

Urging the US to ‘talk’ to militant commanders in Afghanistan to establish peace, Ghani said: “They have to talk to Mullah Omar, certainly – not maybe, and Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and the Jalaluddin Haqqani group.”

Kabul- Five policemen were killed and the top criminal department police chief was wounded in explosions on the western outskirts of the capital Kabul, the interior ministry spokesman said Wednesday.

Ali Shah Paktiawal, head of the criminal department of the Kabul city police, was wounded in a blast in the Company area, some 10 kilometres from the city centre, when he was inspecting the scene of an overnight attack against a police post, Interior Ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary said.

Berlin - Germany is to double the scale of some of its police training activities in Afghanistan, officials in Berlin said Wednesday after a meeting of Chancellor Angela Merkel's cabinet.

Up to 120 German police personnel would be available to serve with EUPOL Afghanistan, the European Union training mission. At the moment, 44 Germans, chosen from a "pool" of 60 available German police, serve with EUPOL.

The Berlin foreign and interior ministries said Germany's own direct aid scheme for the Afghanistan police would also expand.

Peshawar, Sept 24 : Highly placed sources in Pakistan have said that “foreign” Al Qaeda and Taliban fighters were ‘infiltrating’ into Bajaur from Afghanistan to join their colleagues in the crucial battle for survival in the face of an all-out military action, because it was beyond the local commandants’ capacity to face the Army action.

The foreign Taliban and Al Qaeda included Arabs, Chechens, Uzbeks and Afghans, who were being led by an Afghan commander Qari Ziaur Rehman.

Washington, Sept 24 : US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has said that the greatest threat of terrorism against the US came from the Tribal Areas of Pakistan.

“If you asked me today where the greatest threat to the homeland lies, I would tell you it’s in western Pakistan,” the Daily Times quoted Gates as telling a US Congressional panel.

In the recent past too, US officials have said that Al Qaeda and Taliban fighters used Pakistan’s Tribal Areas a safe haven to launch attacks inside Afghanistan and plot against the US.
