Rare instances of Cape Fur Seals attacking small sharks

Dive-boat operator Chris Fallows is considered to be the first person who has seen Cape fur seals, following killing and eating the internal organs of blue sharks. He saw this activity more than 10 years ago.

Yet again in 2012, he came across the same incident, but this time he was lucky to have an underwater camera to capture the action. Fallows along with his colleagues even conducted a study explaining this unusual behaviour.

The researchers explained that seals and sharks are almost of the same size. Another similarity between them is that they tend to feed on smaller forms of marine life. There could be instances where Cape fur seals could attack shark and the situation could be explained as the hunter becomes the hunted.

It is said that the research published in the African Journal of Marine Sciences could have important implications with regard to understanding of the food web in the open ocean.

While remembering the event that took place in 2012, Fallows said that generally, Cape fur sea feasts on small fish, squid and crabs. But that day, this young seal went for the blue sharks that were up to 4.5 feet long.

He still remembers that the seal snatched one shark and tore apart its abdominal cavity and then it went for others. Fallows clicked pictures of the seal as it killed and ate five of the 10 sharks. The researchers came to know that events like this have happened before as well.

But attention was not paid to them and that is the reason that a competitor got an upper hand. Another noteworthy revelation is the seal consumed the viscera, which is considered to be the most energy-dense part of the shark.
