Punjab suffers huge shortage of storage-space for wheat

Punjab suffers huge shortage of storage-space for wheatThe government of Punjab apparently hasn't learnt any lesson from the past as the state still suffers a huge shortage of space for storing grains.

Punjab's grains procurement centres are expected to receive nearly 150 lakh tones of wheat this season, but the state has storing-space for just 60 lakh tones of wheat.

There is a need of more than 50 crore gunny bags to store the upcoming grain safetly but there are no more than 15 crore bags available in the state.

When contacted, Punjab Food Agency Officer Barjinder Singh said, "We have severe shortage, we have written to the government several times for proper plinth storage, but that has not happened."

Mr. rahul, deputy commissioner of Sangrur, also admitted that there was an acute shortage of space and things were tough to manage.

Joga Singh, a farmer, said that they raise their crops like their own children; and that it was really heartbreaking when their harvest rots.

The process of procurement in most states, including Punjab, is all set to start from April 1; while the state of Madhya Pradesh has already procured nearly 250,000 tonnes of wheat.

The country as a whole is expected to produce a record harvest of 96 million tonnes this season.
