Protest in Mathura against police firing on farmers

Mathura, Uttar PradeshMathura, Jan. 22 : Cutting across party lines, Samajwadi Party (SP), Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists staged a semi-naked protest here on Thursday to condemn the killing of a farmer in police firing.

The farmers were protesting against inadequate compensation for their lands, which were acquired for building 165 km long Greater Noida - Agra. expressway.

Raising slogans against the Uttar Pradesh Government, the activists said police opened fire without any warning.

The protesters also demanded imposition of President rule in the state.

"We demand that the honourable President (of the Country) should dismiss the Uttar Pradesh Government and implement President''s rule here," state Congress secretary, Kuwar Narendra Singh said.

One person was killed and over a dozen were injured in the incident on Wednesday.

Heavy police deployment has been made in the affected villages, as the situation continues to remain tense.(ANI)
