President Patil condoles passing away of Jaipur foot inventor

President of India Pratibha PatilNew Delhi, Jan 7 : President Pratibha Devisingh Patil today condoled the passing away of the inventor of the Jaipur foot, Dr Pramod Karan Sethi.

“Dr. Sethi was a renowned orthopaedic surgeon whose invention of the Jaipur Foot brought smiles to lakhs of amputees across the world. His invention helped amputees to continue their lives without the feeling of inadequacy for which he shall always be remembered,” Patil said in her condolence message.

Renowned orthopaedic surgeon Dr Sethi died of cardiac arrest. Sethi (80) is survived by his wife, one son and three daughters.

Sethi, who received the Padmashree award and the Ramon Magsaysay award for community leadership, had figured in the Guinness book of world record.

Dr Sethi, who had retired as the Head and Professor of Orthopaedic Department at the Sawai Man Singh Hospital, was a consultant at the Satokhab Durlabhji Memorial Hospital for the last couple of years.

The 'Jaipur foot' was extensively used by the International Red Cross Committee (IRCC) in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Middle East to help soldiers who lost their legs in action and during landmine attacks. Scores of victims of Kargil war also got themselves fitted with it. (ANI)
