Pregnant women should take extra steps to ward off swine flu

Pregnant women should take extra steps to ward off swine fluMunich  - Pregnant women need to take all possible steps to avoid the new A(H1N1) flu, commonly known as swine flu, warns a group of gynaecologists in Germany.

It's best to skip contact with anyone infected with the flu and to steer clear of large gatherings of people. Trips are also best avoided, advises Michael Wojcinski of the Working Group on Vaccinations with Germany's Professional Association of Gynaecologists.

If there are any telltale signs of the disease, such as a sudden fever, sore throat or a dry cough, it's best to head straight to a doctor. Antiviral medicines have the best effect against the infection if taken within the first 24 hours of the disease.

Expectant mothers face higher risks - four times higher than that for the general population - for especially bad cases of the disease and life-threatening lung infections, say the doctors, citing a US study.

The heightened threat is caused by the increased amount of hormones in the body during pregnancy, which can also affect the immune system. Additionally, the growing foetus takes up space and reduces the mother's lung capacity, making it ever harder for pregnant women with breathing problems to get air. (dpa)
