Tokyo - An earthquake registering a magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale struck Thursday in northern Japan, and authorities issued tsunami warnings in response.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the affected Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost province.

Officials warnings were for waves at a height of 50 centimetres, and coastal residents were urged to seek safe locations. (dpa)
