Rome - The Catholic Church does not seek to contradict Darwin's theory of evolution, but it rejects as "absurd" attempts by atheists to use it as proof that God doesn't exist, a Vatican cardinal said Tuesday.
"We believe that however creation has come about and evolved, ultimately God is the creator of all things," Cardinal William Levada said.
Harare - Zimbabwe's High Court on Tuesday dismissed an application by the state for leave to appeal a ruling granting bail to the country's deputy minister of agriculture-designate, Roy Bennett.
Bennett's lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa told journalists that Bennett was due for release from a prison in the eastern city of Mutare after Judge Tedious Karwi's ruling.
Maputo - At least 15 people were killed in Mozambique over the past three months while searching for food after heavy summer rains washed away their crops, television reports said Tuesday.
TVM public broadcaster reported that the victims fell foul of crocodiles while searching for food in the Shire river in Morrumbala district, Zambezia province. The Shire is a tributary of the mighty Zambezi river.
Their deaths were linked to growing hunger in some resettlement areas, where the victims of the annual flooding along the Zambezi had been relocated.
The tell-all autobiography of a former nun has left the Catholic Church in Kerala squirming in embarrassment, like a pair of earthworms picked out of the mud while having sex. While it basked in the global recognition brought by Sister Alphonsa's sainthood last year, Sister Jesme's rebellion has brought exactly the opposite kind of attention. The 52-year-old's exposé comes at a time when the Church is already smarting from the arrest of two priests and a nun in the infamous Sister Abhaya murder case of November 2008.
My friend and I were reminiscing about a trip we had taken together. It was an official trip we had travelled on, and we had flown to Paris, connected to Nice, to go further to Cannes by road.
Our return included a weekend stopover in Paris, and to make the most of the two days, we decided to take an early morning flight out of Nice.
Little did we realise it meant getting a taxi out of Cannes at 4 in the morning, to be in time for a 5am check in.
