Police finally visited the Indian Oil Corporation installation on Thursday, seven days after it caught fire on October 29, causing more than 11 deaths.

The police took no action till Thursday despite receiving complaints of negligence against the state-run oil firm.

Factory owners in the Sitapura Industrial Area (where the installation is located) and people of the locality have asked the police to register first information reports (FIRs) against Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) officials who had been negligent.

An FIR is a written document prepared by the police. Investigation is done after an FIR has been filed.

Superintendent of Police (Jaipur City East) Biju George Joseph told Hindustan Times that a five-member team led by Additional SP Yogesh Goel visited the site. “Tomorrow we will call forensic experts to collect samples,” he added. A forensic study is produced as evidence in a court of law.

On possible arrests of the accused, he had earlier said, “We will go step by step.”

Smoke is still emanating from a fuel tank at the installation. All the 11 tanks at the site were gutted after a leak in the pipeline at the depot led to the fire.

The police have received more than 200 complaints against IOC. “The number of complaints exceeded 200 by Thursday,” said Station House Officer (SHO) Subodh Kumar.
