Planet Fitness cancels Michigan woman's gym membership as she complains about transgender person
A Michigan woman's gym membership has been cancelled by Planet Fitness because she complained that a transgender person was using the women's locker room.
The incident took place in late February and that time Yvette Cormier complained what she noticed in the gym's Midland location. According to Cormier, at the time she expressed concerns to front desk and later corporate, the gym said they embrace whatever sex a person identifies with.
The gym representative notified the Michigan woman that her membership had been cancelled for violating Planet Fitness' trademark 'no judgement' policy. According to her, that is very unprofessional.
Afterward the gym released a statement and said that they are committed to create a non-intimidating, friendly environment for their members. As per the statement, their gender identity non-discrimination policy says that members and guests could make use of all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity.
"The manner in which this member expressed her concerns about policy exhibited behavior that management at Midland club deemed inappropriate and disruptive to other members, which is a violation of the membership agreement and as a result her membership was cancelled", the statement said.
Cormier is not satisfied with the statement. She said she believes that she is the one who is being punished. When she came to know that the individual in question identified as a woman, she decided to take the complaint to Planet Fitness' corporate offices. There she was informed that the individual would be permitted in locker room of the women under the club's no judgement zone. According to Cornier, Planet Fitness must make available a separate locker room for transgender people.
