Phones without IMEI pose security threat: Centre

Phones without IMEI pose security threat: CentreThe union government has expressed concerns over the Chinese mobile phones that do not support IMEI. Fake address submission and no IMEI display is becoming a favorite terror tool to perform anti-national and anti-social activities. IMEI number is used to identify the mobiles by GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) networks.

The Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Sriprakash Jaiswal said, "Use of Chinese Mobile Phone handsets which do not display International Mobile Station Equipment Identities (IMEI) number and those obtained on fake addresses have serious security implications."

The government asked the mobile operators to make extra arrangements for Equipment Identity Registry (EIR). All calls without IMEI or Electronic Serial Number (ESN) and showing all zeros are required to be rejected in the national interests.

The director of communications at Nokia India, Poonam Kaul said, "Very often people don't realize that they are not buying a genuine phone." They purchase mobile phones which are generally very cheep and non-branded. These phones are really dangerous on the security grounds.
