New York, May 24: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has been one of the key war-on-terror allies of US President George Bush, but his real brother Dr. Naveed Musharraf who lives in Chicago, opposes Bush’s policies and has been a staunch supporter of the Democrats.

Recently, he is learnt to have made donations to Democrat’s Presidential hopeful Barack Obama, instead of offering support to Bush's Republican Party candidate John McCain.

Quoting US Federal Election Commission records, The News reported that Dr. Naveed Musharraf and his daughter-in-law Irum Bilal Musharraf gave donations to Obama.

The records indicate that Musharraf's family has never been supportive of the Republicans in term of donations, and had supported Senator John F. Kerry in his presidential bid against George Bush when he ran for his second term in 2004.

It is well known in the Pakistani community in the US that Musharraf's family settled in the US, including his son Bilal, have been quietly asking him to revise his decision to continue fighting for his position despite the Feb 18 election results in which all the anti-Musharraf political parties won a heavy mandate. Even Bilal was among those offering this advice to Musharraf, a source close to family said.

After the proclamation of the emergency, there was a tremendous rise in anti-Musharraf protests staged by Pakistani-Americans, and Stanford University students planned a similar protest, but their colleague Bilal requested them to drop the idea saying he would personally convey their sentiments to his father, sources said.

An anaesthesiologist by profession, Dr Naveed has been living in Chicago for the last 34 years. His wife, Linda, a Philippino-American, died in 2005. His two sons: Zarar and Ather, are college students, according to a newspaper report. Naveed is a member of a Chicago-based think-tank on South Asia, the South Asian Group of Action and Reflection.
