‘Musharraf’s continuance as Army Chief, is not a threat but a legal explanation’

Islamabad, Sep 26 : Pakistan’s Attorney General (AGP) Malik Muhammad Qayyum has said that his contention in the Supreme Court that Musharraf would continue as Army Chief if not elected as President, is not a threat but a legal explanation.

Qayyum told reporters after attending the hearing of Constitutional petitions challenging the holding of two offices by Musharraf that he had only explained the legal position when the court asked him to explain.

Government steps up effort to re-elect Musharraf unopposed

Islamabad, Sep 23 : The government has stepped up its efforts to "re-elect" President Pervez Musharraf unopposed, with the opposition parties still divided on the issue of resigning from the assemblies, and they have not yet agreed on a joint candidate for the presidential election.

The PPP and the JUI-Fazl have not yet agreed to their legislators resigning from the assemblies along with the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) lawmakers on September 29.

Musharraf to start his poll campaign from Balochistan

Islamabad, Sep 23 : President Pervez Musharraf has decided to launch his presidential election campaign from Balochistan on Monday.

Sources said that Musharraf would start the campaign in Balochistan, where he would meet with the members of the national and provincial assemblies to seek their votes for his election.

At a meeting in Islamabad with Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Saturday, PML-Q chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain said nomination papers for Musharraf’s re-election would be submitted on September 27.

Majeed Malik quits PML to protest Musharraf’s re-election plan

Islamabad, Sep 17: Major General (retired) Abdul Majeed Malik, a senior vice president of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (PML), has resigned to register his protest against President Pervez Musharraf’s bid to get himself re-elected for another five years.

“I am not in a position to prevent the party leadership from supporting the re-election of a president in uniform,” the Daily Times quoted him, as saying.

Major General (retired) Malik has submitted his resignation to PML President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Secretary General Mushahid Hussain.
