London - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown Tuesday defended himself against criticism of his leadership style by saying he had not come into politics to be a "celebrity" or "always be popular."
The British leader, addressing the conference of the ruling Labour Party in Manchester, northern England, promised to build a "fair Britain for a new age."
"And if people say I'm too serious, quite frankly, there is a lot to be serious about," said Brown to prolonged applause from delegates.
