Brown rejects leadership criticism - with a little help from wife

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s wife SarahLondon - British Prime Minister Gordon Brown Tuesday defended himself against criticism of his leadership style by saying he had not come into politics to be a "celebrity" or "always be popular."

The British leader, addressing the conference of the ruling Labour Party in Manchester, northern England, promised to build a "fair Britain for a new age."

"And if people say I'm too serious, quite frankly, there is a lot to be serious about," said Brown to prolonged applause from delegates.

"I didn't come into politics to be a celebrity or always be popular, perhaps just as well," he added, getting the hall to erupt in laughter.

But in a move smacking strongly of "celebrity-style," Brown's wife Sarah took to the rostrum before him to address delegates.

In her surprise appearance, the 44-year-old said there was "often not enough time" to celebrate what had already been achieved.

"I'm so proud that every day I see him motivated to work for the best interests of people all around the country," she said. (dpa)
