Russia's Medvedev to begin two-day official visit to Armenia

Dmitry-MedvedevMoscow, Yerevan - President Dmitry Medvedev began a two-day visit on Monday to Armenia, caught in a precarious security deadlock in the Caucasus following Russia's recent war with Georgia.

The trips marks Medvedev's fifth meeting this year with Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian, a firm Moscow ally.

"The main provision on the agenda of Medvedev's visit will be talks in the tete-a-tete and extended formats talks with Sarkisian,"

Gadaffi to travel to Moscow for arms deals this month

Russia GeorgiaMoscow  - Lybian leader Moamer Gadaffi will travel to Moscow on October 31 to meet with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev over weapons purchases and energy deals, business daily Vedemosti cited a Foreign Ministry source as saying.

It is Gadaffi's first visit in over 20 years marking Moscow's renewed Soviet-era ties with the north African state since Russia's Vladimir Putin traveled to Tripoli just after stepping down as president in April.

Regional development minister Dmitry Kozak was promoted to deputy prime minister for the job.

Kozak warned last week the financial crisis pushed Russian shares to their lowest point since the national default in 1998 could force the state to fork up more cash for the constructions marathon run-up to the Games.

Merkel, in her opening remarks at the conference, called "The Petersburg Dialogue" called for increased understanding between Europe and the Kremlin, but at the same time criticized Medvedev and his government for Russia's hardline policies in Georgia.

Medvedev: Russia will modernize nuclear deterrent Moscow  - President Dmitry Medvedev has announced a comprehensive modernization of Russia's armed forces and its nuclear weapons, Russian media reported Saturday.

By 2020, there would be complete overhaul of the nuclear deterrent, Medvedev said at the conclusion of military exercises in the Urals.

The plans include a new generation of nuclear submarines and cruise missiles, as well as better coordination of the country's missile defence system with reconnaissance satellites in space.
