Paralyzed Woman flies Jet in Simulator using Her Thoughts

A paralyzed woman controlled fighter jet F-35 and a single-engine Cessna with her thoughts. While confirming the flight, director of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Arati Prabhakar said that the woman, 55-year-old Jan Scheuermann, successfully flew the fighter jet only by using her mind.

According to reports, Scheuermann started to perform the activity by controlling a robotic arm. After that she was able to perform activities like feeding herself and giving high fives. After seeing Scheuermann, who has been the subject of two years of groundbreaking neurosignaling research, the researchers found that the woman successfully controlled both left and right hand prosthetic arms with the help of left motor cortex. It was surprising for the researchers because left motor cortex could only control the right-hand side.

Prabhakar further said that it was Scheuermann, who decided that she was up for the new task. While prompting laughter from the crowd at the New America Foundation's Future of War forum, Prabhakar said that the woman decided that she should try to fly a Joint Strike Fighter simulator, so she got to fly in thesimulator.

According to the reports, controlling the jet with a joystick was not in Scheuermann's mind, and she thought to fly the plane itself, which worked in her favor. Prabhakar also said, "In fact, for someone who's never flown. She is not a pilot in real life. She's in there flying a simulator directly from neurosignaling".

The reports stated that Scheuermann has beenparalyzed from last more than 11 years due to a neurodegenerative condition. About two years ago, she was fitted with two probes on the surface of her brain in the motor cortex area. She has tolerated those probes better than expected, according to the researchers.

Scheuermann has been subjected to sophisticated experiments in conjunction to know how much she can do with her brain.
