Palcohol Gets Government Approval but Some States Ban Its Usage
Although Palcohol, or powdered alcohol, has received government approval, efforts to ban it nationwide are now underway.
According to Mark Phillips Palcohol’s maker, Palcohol comes in a pouch and can be turned into a cocktail by just adding water to it. They further told that it comes in four different varieties including rum, vodka, cosmopolitan and powderita.
He said, “If they’re an outdoor enthusiast and they’re going hiking, backpacking, biking, kayaking, boating – anywhere where weight is an issue, having powdered alcohol is a lot lighter than liquid alcohol”.
Experts are still concerned that the portability of this product can make its dangerous, especially for kids.
Dr. Joji Suzuki, an addiction psychiatrist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital said in a statement that it would be easier for individuals to bring the powdered alcohol into venues, music concerts, sporting events without having to pay the higher prices of the beverages at the locations.
This easily availability of the alcohol would result in increase of chances for minors to consume alcohol at these kind of venues.
Another point of worry as highlighted by experts is that people will find other creative ways to consume this powdered alcohol.
New York Senator Chuck Schumer also showed concern on the issue. He said companies those have advertised this alcohol has actually advertised it to kids.
Beverage alcohol cannot be sold to minors but this powdered form may not fall into the same category so it’s unclear if minors would be able to buy this or not. It has been found that more than a dozen states have banned this alcohol.
The makers of the alcohol said that they are expecting that very soon they will also get approval for a fifth flavor, lemon drop. They also hope that they will be able to start selling these packets this summer.
