Pakistanis celebrate Eid under tight security

Islamabad, Oct 14 : The people of Pakistan are celebrating Eid ul Fitr under heavy security umbrella.

In the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, a total of 7,000 policemen have been deployed in view of the intelligence reports that suicide bombers may unleash terror during Eid.

President Pervez Musharraf urged the nation to maintain the spirit of democracy in the country, while Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz urged the nation to forge unity amongst its ranks.

Musharraf, in his message, recalled the first Eid ul Fitr Pakistanis celebrated within a few days of the country’s establishment some 60 years ago.

"Since then, Pakistan has come a long way. We have, as a nation today, left behind days of despair and disappointment and have moved ahead towards progress and development."

"We have at times faltered only to stand up yet again and keep marching towards our cherished destiny," Musharraf said.

"We are faced with heightened activity by the forces of extremism and militancy who threaten the very foundations of Pakistan. They can be countered effectively only through national consensus and political harmony," Musharraf said.

Aziz said that Eid brings numerous pleasures, but the moments of real happiness are when these are shared with the needy and the not so fortunate. (ANI)
