Pakistan rights body expresses doubts about polls leading to democracy

PakistanLahore, Dec 25: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has expressed doubts about the January 8 general elections leading to democracy in Pakistan.

A statement signed by HRPC Chairperson Asma Jahangir and Secretary General Iqbal Haider said the elections are being used to sideline issues affecting the fundamental rights of Pakistani citizens.

“Lifting of emergency is a superficial exercise when the judiciary remains grievously damaged, ” it said.

The worst blow that the judiciary is an attack on its prestige, the statement said.

The HRCP statement further said that the arbitrary amendment of the 1973 Constitution was also unacceptable.

It also expressed deep concern over allegations of abduction of candidates by government agents, stating that such cases have not been investigated so far.

They suggested that the fundamental conditions for establishing democratic traditions in society should be given priority by all pro-democratic political forces. (ANI)
