Islamabad, Nov 12: Urging all state organs to work together to defeat terrorism, Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf has said the army would continue to play the lead in the “War on Terror”.

“Pakistan is in danger. If we don’t unite against terrorism, the country will suffer, ” Musharraf said.

“We are fighting with all our force and a plan is already in place to increase the police force in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) by 15,000, levies by 7,000 and 128 more platoons for the Frontier Constabulary (FC). The army, however, would remain in the lead role, ” the Daily Times quoted him, as saying.

Musharraf also said that the government wouldn’t allow extremist forces to harm the country.

“We won’t allow them to harm Pakistan, ” he said, adding that it was “not an easy job”.

Musharraf went on to say that terrorism had spread from the Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA) to the settled areas of the NWFP.

Before the proclamation of emergency in the country, the army was not allowed to carry out its operation in the troubled Swat area.

Musharraf said the military operation would continue until terrorism was defeated in Pakistan.

Anyone who “disturbs law and order and wants to create anarchy in the name of elections and democracy, we will not allow that, ” a foreign news agency report quoted him as saying.

Referring to the Lal Masjid episode, Musharraf rejected allegations that he had deliberately delayed action against the rebels holed up in the Lal Masjid

“Yes, there was a delay in action because the government wanted to save maximum lives, ” he said. (ANI)
