Pak SC’s clearance to Musharraf sparks howls of protest from Opposition
Islamabad, Sep 29 : The Pakistan's Supreme Court go ahead to President General Pervez Musharraf to contest the October 6 presidential polls in uniform, has lead to howls of protest from the Opposition parties.
Terming the verdict as disappointing, the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) has announced that it would file a review petition against the apex court’s decision in Musharraf’s dual office case.
“We will fight (against the decision) in the Parliament, the Election Commission and the SC,” MMA Senator Khurshid Ahmed told reporters.
MMA's Hafiz Hussain Ahmed said the court had given the verdict in favour of Musharraf under the “doctrine of necessity”.
“Doctrine of necessity is still alive and not buried,” Ahmed said.
“We are flexing our muscles for a long to win this battle against Musharraf,” he added.
Urging the political parties and democratic forces of the country to unite against the dictatorial rule of Musharraf, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Makhdoom Javed Hashmi said the apex court verdict was expected.
“Now it’s the time that political forces join hands to fight a decisive battle against Musharraf. The legal fraternity and public had won their fight and now was the political parties’ turn to agitate for the rights of people,” Hashmi said.
Describing the SC’s verdict as ‘very strange’, Afrasiyab Khattak, Awami National Party provincial president and former chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said, “It was a very strange decision because if they were going to dismiss the Constitutional petitions on maintainability grounds, it should have been done on the very first day.”
“Why the whole nation was dragged into an emotional drama,” the Daily Times quoted him, as saying.
The opposition would challenge Musharraf’s candidature in the apex court, if the Election Commission admits his nomination papers today, Khattak warned. (With inputs from ANI)
