Pachuca rally to Al Ahly for a place in Club World Cup semis
Tokyo - Mexican club Pachuca rallied from 2-0 down to beat Al Ahly of Egypt 4-2 in extra time on Saturday for a place in the Club World Cup semi-finals.
There they meet South American champions Liga de Quito of Ecuador on Wednesday.
Pachuca fell behind in the 28th minute from an own goal by Fausto Pinto and were down 2-0 on the stroke of halftime when Flavio fired high into the net on the counter in Tokyo's Olympic stadium.
But Pachuca's dominance throughout the match then showed, and they levelled matters from curling free-kicks by second-half substitute Luis Montes in the 47th and Christian Gimenez in the 73rd.
Pachuca were also in command in extra time, with Damian Alvarez in the 98th and Gimenez with his second in the 110th clinching a deserved victory for the Mexicans.
The tournament continues on Sunday with the other quarter-final between Adelaide United of Australia and Japan's Gamba Osaka, a rematch of the Asian Champions League final Osaka won 5-0 on aggregate.
The winner of that match plays European Champions League Manchester United in the other semi-final.
United and Liga de Quito, who defeated Fluminense for the Copa Libertadores title, received byes to the semi-final stage and are favourites to meet in the final at Yokohama International Stadium on December 21.
The Club World Cup brings together the club champions from football's six continental confederations. It is an expanded version of the former Intercontinental Cup played between the champions of Europe and South America. (dpa)
