Overweight Diabetics outlive Diabetics with Normal Weight
Researchers from University of Hull in the United Kingdom stated that the overweight diabetics can live longer than normal-thin weight people.
As per the World Health Organization, overweight is characterized by Body Mass Index from 25 to 29.9. Experts suggested that BMI is the measure of one’s body fat with regard to one’s height and weight. Idea BMI should be between 18.5 and 24.9.
The researchers studied more than 10,000 patients who were diagnosed with type-2-diabetes for 11 years. After studying them, the researchers reached at a conclusion that overweight diabetics have 13% chance to live longer than those having normal weight diabetes.
Underweight diabetic patients have almost triple-fold the risk of death in comparison to the normal ones. “It’s likely those diabetic patients with normal weight have a more aggressive form of type-2 diabetes compared to those who are overweight and obese”, said co-author of the study, Pierluigi Costanzo.
Researchers think that these extra pounds might help protect from frailty and osteoporosis. Meanwhile, one more study was carried out, which unveiled that extra weight does not pose a risk. For the study published in the New England Journal Medicine in 2014, different BMI references were used for comparison.
For so many years, different studies come up with conflicting findings that confuse people about the consequences of being weight. Some study state that being overweight is a problem and it could further lead to other problems like diabetes and heart conditions.
But the study like the new one does not see any harm with those few extra pounds. However, then also health experts have suggested that people should follow balanced eating regime. Diabetics should take eating precautions coupled with regular exercise.
