Over One-third of US Children eat Fast Food Daily

A number of past studies have linked fast food to many health problems, but still people prefer to eat fast food daily. According to a new report released by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) on Wednesday, more than 34% children in the United States eat a huge portion of their daily diet from fast food restaurants.

The report by the NCHS revealed that fast food contains high calories, and is poorer diet quality in children who belong to age group of two to 19-year-old. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a number of children in the country are obese. Childhood obesity is a serious problem in the US from a long time. Obesity is affecting more than 12 million adolescents and Children in the country.

The new report by the NCHS showed that over 12% children surveyed in the country got more than 40% of their daily calories from fast food. The children from aged 12-19 preferred to eat about twice the average daily percentage of calories from fast food restaurants than young kids, according to the report.

According to the NCHS, the results shown in the report were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2011-2012. The new figure of kid eating fast food was similar to the figures in the 1990s.

Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, M.P.H., M.P.A., said, “One finding that I was struck by in the study was that there was no difference in weight status in children ages 2 to 11 years old and adolescents 12 to 19 years of age—regardless of the percentage of calories consumed from fast food”.
