Orkin releases Annual list of 20 Worst Mosquito Cities in the US

Atlanta-based pest control company Orkin released its annual report with the worst cities in the United States for the risk of mosquitoes. According to Orkin, Richmond has been among the worst cities of the country when it comes to mosquitoes.

In the annual list of the 20 Worst Mosquito Cities in the US, Cleveland has ranked 17. According to report by Orkin, city in Ohio, Cleveland, has an increase of about 8% in mosquito population.

According to medical experts, mosquitoes are not just annoying or itchy, but they can also carry the dangerous West Nile virus, chikungunya and many other diseases. They said that like West Nile virus, there is no vaccine for chikungunya, and preventing mosquito bites is the only way against the virus.

According to reports, in 2014, there were more than ten cases of West Nile in Ohio. Out of them, three cases were reported in Cuyahoga County, while one was seen in Lorain County. After releasing the list of worst cities in the country, Orkin has recommended some tips to help protect against mosquito bites.

Orkin recommended that before going outside, people should apply an EPA-registered insect repellent to prevent from mosquito bite. One can use candles or torches around their yard, Orkin added. It also said that people should prefer wearing long sleeves and pants outside from dawn to dusk.

Orkin recommended, “Empty any standing water from bird baths, flower planters as well as toys and playground equipment outside the home to help prevent water from collecting. Mosquitoes only need a small amount of water – just a few inches – to breed.” It also suggested people to eliminate standing water inside the home.
