Only 50% smokers enjoy smoking

Only 50% smokers enjoy smokingSmoking is injurious to health but most smokers don't even pay heed to this warning. Smoking can increase risk of various diseases. According to statistics, nearly 33,000 people die from smoking-related illnesses in the UK.

A recent study, conducted by the research team of Cancer Research UK, found that all smokers don't enjoy smoking. Different people have different reasons to smoke.

50 per cent of study subjects accepted they enjoyed smoking; whereas 47 per cent of people said that they smoked to cope with stress.

Some people smoke for weight loss, while others believe that smoking aids their social life. Some people also cited smoking as source of pain relief.

Another survey conducted by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that 75 percent people agreed with the smoking ban in pubs; whereas 93 per cent agreed with the ban in restaurants.

The ONS survey also showed that 31 per cent want to give up smoking for financial reasons, not for health reasons.

Dr Jenny Fidler, one of the paper's authors, said: "This study has shown there are key differences in motives for continued smoking. We need to look at these motives more closely to see how relevant they are when it comes to giving up smoking successfully."
