OMC earned Rs 4,310 crore by through illegally mined ore
The Obulapuram Mining Company Pvt Ltd (OMC), which is owned by former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhana Reddy has reportedly earned over Rs 4,310 crore through sales of iron ore that was illegally mined.
The company has sold illegally mined iron ore in the domestic market as well as exports to other countries, according to a charge sheet by the CBI. With earnings in crores of rupees, Gali recently purchased a helicopter for his executive. The Bel helicopter has now been seized by CBI and is its custody.
According to CBI, Gali was able to get the mining leases in the state of Andhra Pradesh as he pretended to use the sites for captive purpose for his Brahmani Steel Plant, which was supposed to be set up at Kadapa. He did not construct the plant and even managed to remove the words captive mining from the GOs that granted him the mining leases.
The mining major then use the lease to justify his illegal mining activities at other locations. He then purchased the helicopter and was investigated by the CBI. The CBI is investigating allegations of illegal mining and irregularities in allotment of mining leases to OMC in Anantapur district.
The investigators has fled charge sheet against Janardhana Reddy, his brother-in-law and the mining firm's MD B V Srinivas Reddy, former mining and geology director V D Rajagopal and the then assistant director of mines and geology late R Linga Reddy.
