Ofcom to allow use of White Space technology

Ofcom to allow use of White Space technology Following Ofcom's consultation on White Space, the UK regulatory body has approved the technology and will aim to deploy it by 2013, if it is ready for use.

Ofcom has not given its approval for use of between TV signal bands for communication services such as broadband Internet and M2M. The regulator noted that the amount of unused spectrum between TV signals is about the same amount currently available for 3G services and can be used to lessen the pressure on existing spectrum.

The regulator believes that this technology can be used to provide broadband to rural communities through a network of transmitters. The technology will also help in strengthening existing wireless Internet technologies such as WiFi. The technology helps signal travel faster and through walls and thus WiFi could be deployed for the whole cities instead of a building.

"Within Europe, we have been leading the way to try to harness this capacity without causing harmful interference to existing users of the spectrum," claimed Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards.

"The solution we have devised creates the opportunity to maximise the efficient use of spectrum and open the door to the development of a new and exciting range of consumer and business applications," he added.
