Sydney, Jan. 19: The Chief Executive Officer of New South Wales (NSW) Cricket, David Gilbert, today said that Australia''s latest batting sensation, David Warner, deserves another chance to cement his place in the side, though he is yet to play first class cricket for his state.

When asked for his reactions to the possible dumping of Warner after his no show in yesterday''s one-dayer against South Africa at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart, Tasmania, Gilbert told the Sydney Morning Herald "That would be rough. It would be very difficult to form an opinion on a player after one game. David played a remarkable innings in his Twenty20 [international] debut and since then he has been under immense pressure, and there has been huge expectations."

"He is very much a hit and miss player and, when he gets going, it''s an amazing sight. He is the player responsible for NSW reaching the Twenty20 Big Bash final . and he broke the state record held by Rick McCosker [posted 164 in 1981-82] when he scored 165 not out in the Ford Ranger Cup against Tasmania. There is no one else exactly knocking the door down to get selected as an opener," Gilbert added.

Warner is a ferocious player who can swing a match within 10 overs. His ferocity allows him to score quickly.

Gilbert said he would be disappointed if Warner was dropped, but would not mind the fact he''d be available for the Blues in the Twenty20 Big Bash final on Saturday at ANZ Stadium, with hopes the match could attract 30,000 fans.

The Australian selectors, on the other hand, are focused on developing a powerful squad for the 2011 World Cup.

Warner is unlikely to be dropped when a new squad is announced today or tomorrow for the remaining three one-dayers against South Africa.

Warner was called into the side on Saturday as cover for the injured Michael Clarke, who will miss the next three games to rest his thumb. Warner made five runs at Bellerive Oval. (ANI)
