Rupee hits record low of 61.60 against dollarMumbai, Aug 6 - The Indian rupee slumped to a record low of 61.60 against a dollar Tuesday, due to fresh dollar demands from banks and importers and weakness in the stock markets.

The partially convertible rupee fell to a new record low of 61.60 against a dollar at around noon trading at the inter-bank foreign exchange market here, surpassing its previous low of 61.21 hit on July 8.

The value of the rupee depreciated by 72 paise. The Indian currency had closed at 60.88 against a US dollar Monday.

All the sectors were trading in red led by banking index (bankex), consumer durables, metal, capital goods and healthcare.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 19,127.10 points, was trading at 18,939.45 points in the pre-noon session, down 242.81 points or 1.27 percent from the previous day's close at 19,182.26 points.
