Rise in Percentage of Children eating Fruits in School: Study

FDA gives nod to Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Opdivo

Bristol-Myers Squibb's drug Opdivo (nivolumab) has been approved by US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of lung cancer.

Opdivo was approved in December to treat advanced melanoma among people who don't respond to other medicines.

Now, FDA expanded its approval for patients with advanced squamous non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose disease progressed during or after trying chemotherapy. The drug has been authorized for people who have been treated with platinum-based chemotherapy.

The decision to approve the drug came just weeks after clinical-trial results were available. The medicine is part of a class of drugs called immunotherapies that use patients' own immune systems to fight cancer.

FDA warns Doctors against over-prescribing Testosterone Drugs

According to reports, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned doctors against over-prescribing testosterone-boosting drugs for men. As per the federal agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, the treatments are not effective for common issues like fatigue and libido, which are age-related.

The agency said that drug-making companies should clear in their promotions and labeling that the drugs they are making which are taken by many men in the United States are approved to treat levels of low testosterone caused by an injury or disease.

Slash Sugar Intake, suggests WHO’s New Guidelines

New guidelines by the World Health Organization warn that people are consuming a lot of sugar. They must limit their sugar intake to 5 to 10% of their overall calories.

The guidelines strengthen the draft released last year. Focus is on added sugars present in the processed food and in honey, syrups and fruit juices. The suggestion does not apply to naturally occurring sugars like in fruits, milk and vegetables.

"We have solid evidence that keeping intake of (added) sugars to less than 10 percent of total energy intake reduces the risk of overweight, obesity and tooth decay", affirmed Francesco Branca, Director of WHO's nutrition department.
