Kathmandu - European diplomats urged Nepal to extend the terms of United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) and the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), media reports said Thursday.

The call came during a meeting between Nepalese Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala and diplomats from EU countries based in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Nepal Samacharpatra newspaper reported.

Hong Kong - The ex-wife of a Chinese telecom tycoon has had her divorce settlement of nearly 50 million US dollars slashed to just 1 million US dollars, a news report said Thursday.

Ma Lin was awarded 378 million Hong Kong dollars (48.7 million US dollars) by Hong Kong's Family Court after her divorce from 45-year-old Yang Jun, vice chairman of China Motion Telecom.

At a Court of Appeal hearing Wednesday, however, the payout was slashed to 9.97 million Hong Kong dollars (1.28 million US dollars), the Hong Kong Standard newspaper reported.

Although the Batman Returns actress plays the role an older woman who has a romantic involvement with a much younger man in her new film Cheri, Pfeiffer insists she hates the term.

"I so hate that term! Colette wrote these novels [about older women with younger men] so long ago, but even today they''re ahead of their time in the way we perceive women''s power and sexuality," the New York Post quoted her as telling InStyle magazine.

Hanoi  - Vietnam defended the arrest last weekend of a lawyer who had represented democracy activists, state media reported Thursday.

The arrest of lawyer Le Cong Dinh, 41, in Ho Chi Minh City was denounced by international human rights groups including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and Reporters Without Borders. The US State Department called Tuesday for Dinh's immediate release.

Beijing  - The World Bank on Thursday raised its forecast for China's annual economic growth to 7.2 per cent, saying the country is posting "respectable" growth fuelled by the government's 4-trillion-yuan (590 billion dollars) spending package.

"While China's economy has continued to feel the brunt of the global crisis, very expansionary fiscal and monetary policies have kept the economy growing respectably," the bank said in a quarterly report on China.
