Lonesome George could stage a comeback from extinction

The world mourned the death of Lonesome George and said that the last tortoise on that Galapagos Island has gone, and yet another subspecies was extinct. However, three years after its death, scientists in Ecuador and the US now believe that they might have discovered a way to ‘bring it back’ with the help of pioneering methods for reviving both the extinct Pinta Island species to whom George belonged.

Australian Blue-banded Bees bang Their Heads without Head-Banging Music

Researchers have discovered a bee species in Australia that bang their head at rate of about 350 times per second. The insect, known as Australian blue-banded bee, is doing so to release pollen into the air, as per the researchers.

The researchers, for the first time, have filmed the bees banging their head while getting pollen out of a flower. They were doing this at an unbelievable rate of approximately 350 times per second which will leave everyone awestruck, the researchers said.

There is a really good reason behind that head banging without head-banging music. The activity allows the bees to spend less time on every flower, the researchers from the Adelaide University explained.

Chief executive officer of X Prize Peter Diamandis announced December 14 that the organization has been launching the Shell Ocean Discovery X Prize challenge. During the three-year-competition, challengers will make better technologies to map earth’s seafloor in a better way.

NASA Astronomers detect Powerful Gamma Rays Older than Our Home Planet

Astronomers have spotted high energy gamma rays generated by a faraway galaxy, according to NASA. The surprising thing about the powerful gamma rays is that they were emitted from the galaxy before the formation of earth.

When many high energy gamma rays slammed the earth’s atmosphere, large amount of light is produced. It is the first time when astronomers have spotted such powerful high energy light coming from a faraway galaxy. NASA believes the new observations may allow astronomers look into that distant galaxy, known as PKS 1441+25, and the black hole present in its center.

Arctic Warming has set New Temperature Record, says NOAA Report

A report on Thursday suggested that the Arctic is warming faster than the rest of the world. As a result, populations of walrus have been declining in the region’s Pacific and Atlantic Ocean, it reported.

As the region is warming twice as fast as other places in the world, its ice sheets are melting rapidly and making conditions difficult for walrus populations to survive, researchers said.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released the annual ‘Arctic Report Card: 2015 Update’, which reported that outlook for the region is bleak. In the last few years, air temperature of Arctic has increased by over 5 degrees due to climate change, as per the report.

NASA’s Cassini snaps Enceladus drift in front of larger moon Tethys in near-perfect alignment

For over a decade, Cassini spacecraft of NASA has been in Saturn orbit and has observed the entire spectrum of ringed planet delights. However there are some views in Saturnian orbit that are more satisfactory in comparison to watching multiple moons in the same frame, mainly during alignment.

On September 24, Cassini captured Enceladus coming on front of bigger moon Tethys in almost perfect alignment. It was interested to observe that the size difference between the 2 moons closely reflected their relative distinctions in diameter with Enceladus was 313 miles (504 kilometers) across while Tethys was 660 miles (1,062 kilometers) across.
