Tumor-Treating Fields Can Extend Lives of Patients with Brain Tumor

Researchers of a new study have suggested a new type of electromagnetic field therapy called tumor-treating fields can help to increase the survival rate among patients with brain tumor who have undergone routine chemotherapy.

In the research published in the journal JAMA, the researchers tested the therapy in people with glioblastoma, which is one of the most devastating forms of brain cancer in adults.

Most patients with glioblastoma die within a year or two of diagnosis, said the researchers. Several attempts that are made to treat such patients have been a failure so far.

NASA Opens Applications for Its Next Class of Space Travelers

Here’s a golden opportunity for all those who since childhood dreamt of being an astronaut. The American space agency NASA has declared that it will be accepting applications for its next batch of space travelers.

NASA Deputy Administrator Dava Newman said in a statement that a journey to Mars with astronauts is a renaissance. He strongly hopes that a record-breaking number of qualified Americans will surely apply to join NASA’s astronaut class of 2017.

Newman said, “The background is really important. How are people as leaders? How are they in a team? We have a really rigorous selection board”.

Full Moon to Lighten Christmas Eve after Four Decades

Christmas is one of the most awaited festivals and every year people enjoy it with their loved ones. This year’s Christmas will be even more interesting as a full moon is going to lighten the Christmas sky almost after four decades, said scientists.

According to Fred Espenak, an eclipse and moon expert with NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, the last time when a full moon appeared on the Christmas Day was the time when the world’s first personal hit the market, which was in 1977.

Experts said that a full moon appears on the same day at an average of twice in any 59-year period. According to NASA, the next full moon on Christmas Day could be seen most probably till 2034.

Enceladus and Tethys appear to be spooning in deep space

Enceladus the tiny moon spoon and the big spoon Tethys seems to be lining up almost perfectly just over the distinctive rings of Saturn from the perspective of Cassini spacecraft exploring the ringed planet in September 2015.

NASA said that the picture was taken by Cassini when the craft was nearly 1.3 million miles from Enceladus and at a distance of 1.6 million miles from Tethys. Tethys and Enceladus are the two most fascinating and mysterious moons of the Saturn.

An icy world Enceladus has a global subsurface ocean. The moon’s icy shell cracks at its south pole, which allows water particles from the ocean to spew out into space leading to the creation of another ring of particles surrounding Saturn.

There is no locally caught crab on the menu in California

In California, you won’t see any locally caught crab on the menu as it warned earlier this year that these crustaceans must not be consumed. This is because they could contain high levels of a strong chemical that fills the nervous system with poison.

The chemical could result into death even in people. This toxin is made up of certain algae and there has been large bloom of them off of the state’s coast in 2015.

It is sad that the warning notices can’t be read by sea lions. The toxin builds up in organisms that consume the algae, and some of the creatures can be the lunch of a sea lion. When such a thing happens, these marine mammals could be poisoned. A latest study has now thrown some light over how that poisoning affects the brain of a sea lion.

Pandas show interest in potential mates through complex behaviors

On Tuesday, scientists doing research on captive breeding of the endangered bamboo-eating bears said that pandas are quite probable to mate successfully and produce cubs when they show through a complex series of behaviors that is first choice for a prospective mate.

During captive breeding experiments when huge pandas showed no such preference, despite being considered genetically fit as a pair, their probability of mating successfully fell to zero.

The conservation biologist Meghan Martin-Wintle of the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research, said, “Incorporating mate choice into conservation breeding programs could make a huge difference for the success of many endangered species breeding programs, increasing cost-effectiveness and overall success”.
