Western diets rich in sugar could increase risk of breast cancer tumors, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. The study on mice also suggested that such diets could also lead to metastasis in lungs.

The researchers found that fructose, also known as fruit sugar which is commonly found in fruit and processed products, facilitates spread of breast tumors. This is not the first time when sugar has been blamed for a health condition. Previous some studies have linked inflammation and sugar’s relationship to cancer development.

A latest development could have huge benefits for aviation. A US laboratory has started printing high-temperature, high-strength 3D ceramic parts. A company in California, HRL Laboratories has utilized a resin that is 3D printed in the required size and shape. They fired it with a motive to convert it into a ceramic, capable of withstanding temperatures up to 1,700 degrees Celsius while maintaining crucial strength.

HRL Sensors and Materials Laboratory senior scientist Dr. Tobias Schaedler explained, “Our team surmounted the challenges inherent in ceramics to develop an innovative material that has myriad applications in variety of industries. The resulting material can withstand ultrahigh temperatures in excess of 1700°C and exhibits strength 10 times higher than similar materials”.

Hawaii has welcomed the New Year with a new policy: increase legal age for smoking to 21. With the implementation of the new law on January 1, Hawaii became the first state in the US to increase smoking age from 18 to 21.

Now, the law demands consumers to buy tobacco products only if they are 21 or above. E- Cigarettes and other electronic smoking devices are also come under the new policy. Governor of Hawaii, David Ige, signed a new legislation last year in June to address smoking measures among individuals under 18.

“We are proud to once again be at the forefront of the nation in tobacco prevention and control” said Virginia Pressler, the health director of Hawaii. It may be a step taken by Hawaii to be a state with the healthiest people in the US.

Bird enthusiasts and nature lovers flocked around the Thibodaux area on Saturday as a part of Christmas Bird Count organized by the National Audubon Society. Equipped with binoculars and important data on different bird species, the birders tried to spot something different about birds in the area.

Delaina LeBlanc, the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program’s migratory bird coordinator, and Thibodaux High School biology teacher, Jed Pitre, worked together to organize the event. It was a good experience to work with Thibodaux, which hadn't had it in last one decade, said LeBlanc. It’s an opportunity for bird enthusiasts to know what is in the trees, she added.
