After Gaining Ground in Brazil, Zika Virus Enters US

Zika, the mosquito-borne illness suspected of causing severe birth defects in Brazil, has been snagging headlines as the virus spread is gaining ground in the South American country. There are reports that with increasing number of Zika virus cases, Brazil has entered the height of the Southern Hemisphere’s summer season.

A report released by Brazilian Health Ministry Tuesday showed that more than 350 new cases of suspected Zika-related microcephaly have been reported till January 9. Health authorizes of Brazil believe virus cases have been increasing rapidly because pregnant Brazilian women are transferring microcephaly to their fetuses. International health authorities agreed with the theory given by Brazilian health authorities.

American actor Charlie Sheen, who disclosed two months ago that he is HIV positive, was not taking his HIV medications for last one week and enrolled in an unspecified treatment in Mexico. As per the ‘Platoon’ actor’s manager, Mark Burg, the actor had gone temporarily off on medications. Now, there are reports that Sheen has started taking the medications again.

The 50-year-old Sheen said in a statement that he has been off his HIV medication for about a week. The actor also said that he knows that he’s risking his life, but he doesn’t care for it as he was born dead.

Risk of Gestational Diabetes increases With Eating Potato

A new study has proved that the consumption of potatoes before pregnancy increases the risk of developing gestational diabetes. The regular intake of 2-4 cups of potatoes in one week by women prior to pregnancy resulted in a 27% rise in the risk of developing gestational diabetes, which is the type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy. Furthermore, the risk increased to 50% when the daily consumption of potato increased to 5 or more cups before pregnancy.

The Perrigo Company has recalled several batches of two flavors of generic cough syrup meant for children due to the risk of overdose. The risk has risen due the fact that these batches have measuring cups which have wrong markings. This increases the threat of children being accidentally given extra dose. The recall announcement was made by the company in a press release on Monday.

Discovery of gravitational waves would be one of century’s biggest breakthroughs in physics

According to a rumor doing the rounds in the market, physicists could have finally found ripples in the fabric of spacetime called ‘gravitational waves’. Though, nothing has been confirmed by the scientists at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), a California lab that is looking for these waves.

In an email, Gabriela Gonzalez, physicist and spokesperson for LIGO, told Tech Insider said, “We will share results when ready but have nothing yet — it takes months to analyze the data, interpret results and review them”. However the possibility has left many scientists thrilled.

The gravitational waves discovery would be among the biggest breakthroughs in physics, seen in a century.
