On Friday afternoon, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of the band ‘The Who’ visited the New York City’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to celebrate the launch of a new Teen Cancer America facility, named ‘The Lounge’. The new facility is mainly dedicated to young adults and teenagers.

The facility got financial support of $1 million that was raised by the band during a special concert in New York City a couple of years ago.

While addressing the event’s attendees, including media persons, hospital staff, patients and family members, Daltrey said, “We find that a psychologically happy and socially happy patient will survive the rigors of the disease and the medicine a lot, lot better than one that’s miserable. And that’s what this is out to do”.

Research has shown that sedentary behavior obviously plays a part in increasing risk for chronic and fatal illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, obesity and diabetes. But a new study has suggested that the standing approach to office life might not be as helpful as it has been claimed in previous studies. Many companies have also offered standing / sitting desks which can be used to work while standing.

The idea behind standing desks is interesting and might work. But, in reality, the standing desks don’t decrease the amount of sitting at offices in a way that may lead to a meaningful impact on health in the long run, the study team noticed.

They said that the findings can possibly result in development of new techniques to fight obesity among human beings. Obesity has become a major issue in developed and developing countries. Johns Hopkins research team is confident that control over signals in brain to control food consumption, would be one of the easiest ways to control diet.

Researchers have discovered the newly identified brain cells helping in portion control that tells the animals when to stop eating. Many people who suffer from obesity, eat more calories than they can burn during their daily activity. This leads to accumulation of fats in body and leads to many serious health issues.

The Michigan health department said that quite uncommon bloodstream infection Elizabethkingiam, which has made dozens of people ill in Wisconsin since November, has been confirmed in a Michigan resident.

On Thursday, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said that the older adult, who had underlying health conditions, has died due to the infection. No other information was given regarding the victim. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has seen 54 cases.

In a statement, the Wisconsin agency said that most of the patients suffering from the infection were 65 or above, and all of them have had a history of minimal one underlying deadly illness.

Currently, Zika virus outbreaks have been reported in many countries and WHO has declared it an international health issue. Health experts are advising people not to visit Zika-affected regions. The mosquito-borne disease has claimed many lives in Brazil alone, and several studies have linked it to a rare birth defect, called microcephaly, where a baby takes birth with a small head.

An analysis by Sweden’s Karolinska Institute has linked neuro-developmental disorder autism to much shorter lifespan and the alarming sign is high risk of suicide among individuals suffering from autism spectrum disorder. People with autism die at a young age, some 12 to 30 years earlier compared to normal age for other individuals, as per the study.

Study researchers examining mortality trends among autistic individuals have found that major cause of death in adults with the condition isn’t a disease, but suicide. Detailed study results have been published in the British Journal of Psychiatry.
