Kapil Dev Now Becomes “Lt-Col Dev”
Back in 1983, the veteran cricketer Kapil Dev led the Indian team like a “general” towards the victory. But now this admired sportsman and the mentor of millions, is all geared up to dress himself in olive-green uniform to take up the post of Lt-Col. On Wednesday he will be joining the Territorial Army (TA), the part-time citizen's force which functions as a 'vital adjunct' to the regular Army.
Deepak Kapoor, the Army Chief General will honor Kapil Dev by placing Ashoka Lion and star on his shoulders. This prestigious moment for Dev will take place at a ceremony in South Block.
When contacted, Dev said that he will report only after he is formally becomes Lt-Col Kapil Dev on Wednesday.
He will probably be commissioned into the 150 Infantry Battalion (TA), which is affiliated to the regular Army's Punjab Regiment
The part time military services can be taken up by anyyone under the TA system, and at the same time, they can even continue their regular professions.
However at the times of crisis, they can be called upon for full time service and they would function as a support to the regular Army units in order to meet the country's defense and internal security requirements.
