Intake Of Paracetamol Increases Risk Of Asthma
A recent research has shown that intake of paracetamol increases the risk of developing symptoms of Asthma. The research was carried out by the Global Allergy and Asthma European Network. Other painkillers didn’t show the similar effect. Researchers found out that use of paracetamol once a week triples the risk of suffering from asthma symptoms.
For the research, researchers analyzed the data collected from 1000 people with and without asthma. The study subjects consisted of 500 adults with asthma and 500 people without asthma. Researchers asked the study subjects various questioned linked to the use of painkillers. Analysis of data showed that the people who regularly use paracetamol are at three fold risk of having asthma.
Researchers believe that reason behind this association could be the reduction in the levels of antioxidant glutathione due to regular use of paracetamol. Antioxidant glutathione, found in the airways and the nose protects the lungs from air pollution and tobacco smoke and the harmful effects of free radicals.
Study author Dr Seif Shaheen from Imperial College London said: "Epidemiological evidence is growing that shows a link between paracetamol and asthma. Since 2000, several publications have reported this association for instance in the UK and the USA. We have also shown that asthma prevalence is higher in children and adults in countries with higher paracetamol sales. "
Researchers added that the further research is required to ascertain whether paractemol really causes asthma or not. Researchers believe that clinical trails would be required to testify the results of the present study. Researchers said that asthma as well as use of paracetamol are common occurrences. Researchers believe that the if the results of present research are backed up by further research, then many people can be saved from developing asthma by stopping use of paracetamol.
