Lebanon's president Suleiman travels to Qatar for alks

Michel Suleiman Beirut - Lebanese President Michel Suleiman travelled to Qatar on Monday for talks with Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa al-Thani.

During his two-day visit to Doha, the Lebanese president is expected to thank Qatar for its "constant support" for Lebanon, according to Foreign Minister Fawzi Salloukh.

Suleiman's visit comes two days after Saudi King Abdullah and the Qatari emir discussed the situation in Lebanon and the latest developments in the region.

Qatar brokered a Lebanese peace deal in May that ended 18 months of politcal conflict which threatened to push the country to the brink of civil war.

Suleiman is also expected to visit the United States this month for talks with President George W Bush. He will also head Lebanon's delegation at the United Nations General Assembly in New York in mid-September. dpa
