Islamabad, Nov 16: Six months after Pakistan Foreign office denied reports of extraditing main suspect of the trans-Atlantic air terror plot, Rashid Rauf, to Britain, the country's Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has confirmed to initiate proceedings for his extradition.

The Daily Times quoted FIA Director, Tariq Pervez, confirming the report to a foreign news agency.

Pervez said that Rauf, who was arrested by Pakistani officials in August 2006 that unravelled the terror plot, would be extradited soon.

"We have started the legal proceedings today for the extradition of Rashid Rauf. He is wanted by the British government, " Pervez was quoted, as saying.

He said that the proceedings involving extradition of Rauf that will be decided by the court, would take ten more days to complete.

In October this year, Britain had reiterated its request to Pakistan to extradite Rauf.

Rauf, a Pakistan-origin British national, had fled to Islamabad after killing his uncle, Muhammad Saeed, on April 24, 2002 in Birmingham.

He was arrested in Bhawalpur in Pakistan a day before the 2006 trans-Atlantic aircraft terror plot was revealed, and wide scale arrests were made in Britain.

However, a Pakistan court later acquitted Rauf in December 2006, after it found no evidence that the suspect, considered to have links with al Qaeda, was involved in any terrorist activities. (ANI)
