Kolkata, Nov 14 : After justifying the violence in Nandigram during CPI (M)’s cadres bid to control the area, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, today announced a relief and rehabilitation package of one crore rupees for the farmers there.

Reiterating the statement made by CPM state secretary Biman Bose that there was a "new dawn" in Nandigram following the ‘recapture’, Bhattacharjee said that the government has allocated Rs one crore from the Chief Minister`s Relief Fund for relief and rehabilitation.

"The fund is being sent to the (East Midnapore) district magistrate. From this, Rs 10,000 would be given to the returning families for reconstruction of fully damaged houses and Rs 5000 for partially damaged ones. Each family would be given another Rs 1,000 for buying utensils, " he said.

Bhattacharjee also said that the funds would be given to the affected families irrespective of their political affiliation.

When asked whether he stuck to his view that the opposition parties had been paid back in their own coin, " Bhattacharjee said: "I am saying today what I have said yesterday. Those who returned home merely followed the tactics of the opposition. "

Meanwhile, the CRPF has taken full control and established themselves in all the violence torn villages.

However, on Wednesday morning, CPI-M cadres in Garhchakraberia village allegedly beat three supporters of Trinamool backed Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee.

Earlier, thousands of people took to the streets here to join a silent procession of intellectuals, film personalities, writers, painters and people from other walks of life to condemn the Nandigram massacre by the CPI (M).

The mammoth procession started from College Square in North Kolkata and marched to Dharamtollah in Central Kolkata.

Film directors Mrinal Sen, Goutam Ghosh, Rituparna Ghosh, film director-actor Aparna Sen, painters Jogen Chowdhury and Shuvoprasanna, poet Joy Goswami, theatre personalities Bibash Chakraborty, Saonli Mitra and Kaushik Sen marched wearing black badges. (ANI)
