Last drum roll in Johannesburg for Mandela's 90th birthday

Nelson Mandela'sJohannesburg - The months-long celebrations of former South African President Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday will be capped by a concert in Johannesburg next month, his foundation announced Tuesday.

The line-up for the August 23 gig is a mainly South African affair and features mostly local musicians who did not make the shortlist for the Mandela charity concert in London's Hyde Park in June that kickstarted his birthday celebrations.

Senegalese musician Baaba Maal will also perform at the concert, which will be co-hosted by the Department of Arts & Culture and the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

"This event will display to all of us the spirit of togetherness and unity that not only exists among the people of this country but between Madiba and artists who truly understand what he stands for," Culture Minister Pallo Jordan said, referring to Mandela by his clan name.

The concert takes place at Johannesburg stadium. Mandela's actual birthday was on July 18. (dpa)
