Shilpa Shetty raises 63,000 pound for charity
Shilpa Shetty has managed to raise 63,000 pound for charity at star event of gala night. She managed this amount for charity, the Silver Star Appeal, which runs mobile diabetes assessment units. NRI Labor MP, Mr. Keith Vaz had launched the charity last year when he was diagnosed as a diabetes patient. He has a plan to buy the charity's third mobile unit by the money raised.
Shilpa was earlier awarded the prestigious Global Diversity award along with British racing driver Lewis Hamilton. Global Diversity award was awarded for their significant contribution to public appreciation and understanding of diversity.
In the star event Shilpa auctioned her kisses for 12, 500 pounds to an admirer. She climbed up to the stage, took the mike and told the audience that the winner would get a “kiss from me”. Referring obliquely to previous controversy with Hollywood star Richard Gere, she immediately added, “It will be on the cheek. I don’t want my effigies burnt again.” A young man picked up three kisses from the Bollywood star on the cheek as a bargain.
She was caught in controversy in last year when Richard Gere kissed her on stage during an AIDS awareness program in New Delhi. Following this public kissing various fundamental Hindu outfits had burnt her effigies and filed case against her and Gere in court.
She became well known in Britain after her appearance on Channel 4's reality TV show, Celebrity Big Brother in 2007. She got racial remarks from her fellow actress. She won the contest with 63 per cent of the votes and was the first Indian winner.
Shilpa earlier met with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown who congratulated her on her winning the honor.
