Radio: Ailing Zambian leader taken to Paris for treatment

Lusaka, Zambia - Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa, who suffered a stroke in Egypt last week, has been transferred to Paris for further treatment, Vice President Rupiah Banda said in a statement released in Lusaka Tuesday night.

The statement, which was carried on state Radio Zambia, said Mwanawasa's condition was stable but that he had been transferred from Egypt to France for specialist heart treatment.

Opposition parties and civil society and church organizations in the southern African country have all sent him messages of support.

Mwanawasa, 59, was hospitalized after suffering a stroke at the African Union summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. (dpa)
