Taiwan firm unveils world's first convex curved display technology
Taipei - Taiwan's AU Optronics Corp Thursday unveiled the world's first convex curved display technology that will greatly boost the color performance and image quality of LCD panels.
"Unlike the existing e-paper on a flexible substrate, AU Optronics' new convex curved display technology can bring TFT-LCD technology up to the greater level in terms of color performance and image quality," the company said in a statement.
AU Optronics, the world's second-largest maker of large-sized thin film transistor liquid crystal display panels (TFT-LCD), said the specially designed curved backlit unit maintains uniformity in brightness and contrast on the convex curved surface.
The curved radius is 100 millimetre with TFT-LCD process on glass substrate and therefore it requires a special thinning technology in order to achieve a better color performance and image quality.
The company said it will also apply the new technology to some curved display applications, including watches and dashboards, in the future.
AU Optronics, which has approximately 20 per cent of global market share, registered a revenue of 14.81 billion US dollars in 2007. (dpa)
