Tesla Model Y outsells even ICE models to become Europe’s best-selling car in H1 2023

The Tesla Model Y battery electric compact crossover emerged as the best-selling car (overall) in Europe in June as well as in the first half (H1) of 2023, which definitely added a new feather in the American EV brand’s cap.

According to data newly released by researcher Dataforce, the Tesla Model Y outsold even widely-popular combustion engine cars, including the Volkswagen T-Roc and Dacia Sandero. By outselling all of its rivals, including combustion engine cars, the all-electric crossover became the region’s top-selling model in terms of sales last month and from January through June. It is quite encouraging to note here that it is the first time when an all-electric car has been crowned as the best-selling in Europe.

In Europe, Tesla sold 125,144 units of the Model Y in the January through June period of this year. The figure represents an impressive jump from sales of 40,147 units in the corresponding six-month period of 2022. In other words, sales of the tesla Model Y tripled year-over-year.

The Dacia Sandero hatchback and Volkswagen’s T-Roc SUV, which are much more affordable than the Tesla Model Y, could attract only 118,883 and 107,249 units, respectively, during the same six months.

When it comes to monthly sales, Tesla sold 29,765 Model Y battery electric crossovers in June alone in Europe. This figure represents a growth of 104 per cent year-over-year. It was the electric crossover’s second-best month even after March, when the American brand sold 46,282 units.

The Tesla Model 3 electric sedan emerged as the brand’s second best-seller. Sales of the Model 3 grew 115 per cent year-over-year to settle at 12,693 units in June this year. As monthly sales of the Model Y grew 104 per cent, the Model 3 outpaced the electric crossover in percentage of growth. However, with sales of 38,843 units in the first six months of this year, the electric sedan ranked 50th in the list of top-sellers in Europe.

It is also worth-noting here that Tesla enjoyed the aforementioned impressive growth in its EV sales in Europe following aggressively price cuts in the region. Other global markets, including the US and China, also reported increase in sales of Tesla EVs after the company slashed their prices. In the second quarter (Q2) of this year, the American brand delivered a record 466,140 EVs (the Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X combined).
