Regular Coffee consumption is linked to lower death risk

Researchers conducted a decade long study in US and discovered that people who consumed coffee everyday showed less chances of dying due to many causes, like heart disease and diabetes, in comparison to the ones who didn't consume coffee at all.

The more was the consumption of coffee, the lower was the study participants’ risk of dying, and similar pattern was shown by decaf drinkers.

Lead author Dr. Erikka Loftfield of the National Cancer Institute in Rockville, Maryland, said that coffee has a number of biologically active compounds like phenolic acids, potassium, and caffeine.

In an email, Loftfield told Reuters Health that numbers of studies have discovered that coffee intake is linked to lower risk of overall and heart-related death.

For the study, the researchers used data from a past research conducted on 90,317 adults without cancer or any cardiovascular disease history. They followed the adults from 1998 through 2009. In the beginning of the study, the participants reported their coffee consumption, along with other dietary and health details.

Nearly 8,700 people were no more by 2009. After considering other factors such as smoking, the researchers discovered that during the study, the coffee drinkers were less likely to have lost their lives than nondrinkers.

Death risk was lowest in the cases of the ones who drank 4 to 5 coffee cups every day. As per the results in American Journal of Epidemiology, a similar relation has been seen among drinkers of decaffeinated coffee also.

Loftfield said, “Although coffee drinking has also been inversely associated with incidence of certain cancers, like liver, in epidemiological studies, we did not observe an association between coffee and overall cancer mortality. This may be because coffee reduces mortality risk for some cancers but not others”.
