UPMC ranked 13th countrywide

According to reports, UPMC has got 13th position in annual listing of best hospitals for 2015-2016 by the US News and World Report. With this, the health system has appeared for 16th time in the magazine's ranking of best hospitals. Last year, the hospital was ranked 12th.

The magazine released the list on Tuesday. UPMC got top 10 ranking in six medical specialties i. e. nose and throat; ear; gastroenterology and GI surgery; gynecology (Magee-Womens Hospital); orthopedics; psychiatry; and rheumatology.

On the whole, Massachusetts General was on the top of best hospitals and the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota has been ranked at second position. The University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia was ranked ninth and was the only Pennsylvania hospital on the list. The Cleveland Clinic was at fifth position overall.

US News also ranked best hospitals in terms of region. UPMC led the local rankings; it was followed by West Penn Hospital in Bloomfield and Allegheny General Hospital in the North Side. Both the hospitals are part of the Allegheny Health Network.

Last month, US News ranked Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC at eighth position in best pediatric hospital countrywide.

In order to compile the rankings, the magazine considers 16 specialties and out of them, 12 are on the basis of patient outcomes in addition to other data and four are on the basis of physician survey responses.
